Best Before Dates- how important are they?

My grandma has always gone on at me about how I care too much care about best before dates, 'we didn't have fridges when I was younger', 'It won't kill you'! I wasn't till I went to uni and started to fend for myself that I realised loads of foods are find after their sell by date. Also, working in a fruit and veg shop taught me that unless it's going furry, it's probably fine!

Soon much food gets chucked and wasted because of the sell by dates! Once food is past it's date then shops will no longer sell them.

Mail Online posted an article highlighting what foods are ok to eat weeks after their sell by date!

Most things weren't that shocking, but I was surprised about meat and fish! It will definitely contribute to my CoP 3, particularly my dissertation.

UK Food Bank Report

Food Banks Save Lives-Real Life Stories

I really feel that looking in to poverty could contribute well to my CoP 3. 13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK and in 2013-14 foodbanks fed 913,138 people nationwide. The Trussell Trust partners with churches and communities to open new foodbanks nationwide. With over 420 foodbanks currently launched, our goal is for every town to have one.

On the Trussell Trust website it gives examples of real life stories on how Food banks have help those in need of food. This could be a really interesting part of my research. Perhaps I could look further in to this? Maybe interview people myself?

Food Illustration

I'm still quite stuck on what area of illustration I'd like to focus on but what I did realise last year was that I don't really like to draw scenes, like a scene in a book for example. I like to draw things, objects, motifs!! Does that make sense?? And I really like drawing food! Particularly fruit and veg! Not sure why. Maybe it's because they all have some different shapes, colours and textures Or maybe it's that I've worked in a green grocers for 4 years now. In fact almost everyone in my family has worked in a green grocers at some point. Is that weird?

Anyway! Of topic! Basically I like drawing food which is on of the reasons I chose to base my project on food waste. So that I could draw lots and lots of lovely food!!

Naturally, the next step is to gather lots of lovely inspiring food illustrations.... so I did:

Follow Rebecca's board food illustration on Pinterest.

Seriously, can you see the pattern?
